Theme parks for health? This might not be your first association given all the tempting goodies, the crowds of people, and the endless thrills. However, most people don’t even realize that hustling from attraction to attraction can add 10+ miles of walking, speed walking, running or stroller pushing per day1. Even more exciting, thrill rides themselves (as your heart pounds and you brace against white-knuckle turns) have been shown to burn calories as well as any workout2. Zeal Trips and Disney teamed up to bring you some tips to get the most out of your family’s next vacation to a theme park, especially at America’s favorites: Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
- Plan Like a Pro – Before you arrive, download the theme park’s app if they have one. The Disney parks’ app is a gold mine of information: maps, line times, order food at park restaurants, and even upgrade to use lightning lanes. Plan to keep your family safe too, by designating places to meet in case you get separated, and by knowing where the baby care and first aid stations are. All these can take the stress out of the day and let you just enjoy each other’s company.
- Schedule Downtime – Taking a break doesn’t have to mean missing out on the fun. In fact, planning your day around parades, shows, firework displays, etc. can be an absolute delight for your eyes and a much-needed break for sore feet. If you’re staying close by, you can even go back to your hotel during peak hours so you can enjoy the cooler and less crowded hours near opening and closing.
- Fuel Your Body – First and foremost, this means staying hydrated. Try locating the drinking fountains and water bottle filling stations for an economical and eco-friendly option. We also recommend you eat healthy… most of the time. Who can resist a Mickey Mouse ice cream bar on a hot day, after all? Packing in your own healthy snack can help you have more lasting energy, and the will to indulge on some treats without overdoing it.
- Stick to Your Budget – Want to keep that relaxed feeling long after the vacation ends? One of the best ways is to avoid overspending. Fortunately, the biggest budget items (park tickets, hotel stays and transportation) come with the biggest potential to save. Some people bundle and save, while others have access to exclusive membership discounts. Also keep in mind that souvenirs, premium experiences, and treats can add up fast if you’re not paying attention, so set a budget beforehand to make sure you get all your must-haves
With a little preparation and a sprinkle of fairy dust, your family’s theme park adventure can boost both your mental and physical health. After all, you’ll probably be having so much fun making memories that you won’t even notice you’re also working out.
